Four Unusual Lifts From Around the World
Lifts are a common sight in many public and residential buildings and their presence makes it much easier to get from A to B. Lifts can also be essential when it comes to moving heavy items between floors, but they’re often not the most interesting to look at. However, not all lifts are created equal and there are some elevators around the world that go far beyond your typical grey box.
If you want to know more about some of the weird and wonderful lifts to be found around the world, read on for just four of our favourites.
The Rising Tide Elevator – Oasis of the Seas
The first elevator on this list isn’t found in a building at all, but on board a cruise ship. The Oasis of the Seas is one of the largest cruise ships in the world and its Rising Tide elevator includes a fully functioning bar. The lift can carry 35 passengers, as well as staff and a fully serviced bar, so guests can enjoy a drink while travelling smoothly between floors.
The Autostadt – Germany
Autostadt means ‘car city’ in German and the lifts inside this facility act as giant elevators for cars. Each fully automated lift has space for 400 cars and new vehicles are delivered from the neighbouring Volkswagen plant via a robotic pallet mounted on rails. The Autostadt is a visitor attraction in its own right and also includes a hotel, restaurants and a museum.
Globen Skyview – Sweden
At 85 metres tall and 110 metres wide, The Ericsson Globe is the largest spherical building in the world. It features several lifts, the Globen Skyviews, tagged onto the outside of the building. These glass globe elevators give visitors a 20 minute ride along the exterior of the building and offer stunning views of the city of Stockholm below.
Santa Justa – Portugal
Built in 1901, the Santa Justa has become a popular tourist attraction for visitors to Lisbon. It can be found in the historical part of the city and the lift is made entirely from iron in a Neo-Gothic style of architecture. The lift runs from the lower streets of the Baixa and includes a lookout point for spectacular views of the city.
