How to Keep Your Elevator and Escalator Hygenic
Now more than ever, keeping your workplace and commercial premise as hygienic as possible should be a top priority. But, while your staff may be sanitising their desks and bringing their own cutlery, there are to areas that could be missed off your radar – elevators and lifts!
Used by staff members, clients, couriers and customers, elevators and escalators can become dirty very quickly. Effective cleaning and disinfection are just two of the recommendations for preventing the spread of COVID-19, especially in high traffic areas, so don’t miss out your lift or escalator in your cleaning routine.
But, what is the best way to keeping these areas hygienic? In this blog, we explain some top tips on how to maintain good cleanliness levels around your elevators and escalators. Read on for all you need to know.
Why should you keep elevators and escalators clean?
Think about how many people use lifts and escalators every day, particularly in commercial environments. These areas are extremely tactile and users grab handrails and touch lift buttons, therefore spreading germs without even knowing. But, despite being high traffic areas many business owners forget about enforcing hygiene practices here too.
Keeping lifts and escalators clean is essential for preventing the spread of illness, but even without the risk of COVID-19, maintaining good hygiene measure should be a top priority. For your employees and the public, keeping the environment clean and tidy will reduce contamination, create a good first impression and ensure that dirt does not affect the way each mechanism runs.
What is the best way of maintaining good hygiene in these areas?
When is the last time that you cleaned your lift or escalator? If you can’t remember or haven’t been cleaning them as much as you should be, it’s time to make a change. There are many simple yet effective things that you can do to improve hygiene levels and become more sterile.
The most important thing to remember is that regular cleaning is best. Depending on how much these areas are used, remember to wipe down and disinfect everything at least once a day if not more. You don’t need to go overboard with cleaning products as a high-quality spray or disinfectant as well as anti-bacterial wipes are enough to do the job.
Here are some top tips for keeping your lift or escalator clean:
If you work in a multi-story office or premises then it’s likely that your lift is still going to be needed even with new hygiene standards in place. Luckily, there are plenty of things that you can do to ensure that your lift does not become a breeding ground for germs and bacteria.

Keep buttons clean
The highest contact area of any lift is the buttons. Since many germs sit on the surface of your fingers, every time somebody touches the buttons, the person afterwards could be contracting these germs too. To avoid this, make sure that all buttons are cleaned regularly. It may be a good idea to provide wipes outside of the lift so each user can clean the area after every trip.
Install an air purifier
Since lifts are small, enclosed spaces riders will be breathing in the same air as others using the lift too. Air purifiers, however, can keep the air pure by removing bacteria that can be passed from person to person. These small devices are installed on the wall or ceiling and require little maintenance.
Clean the pit
As well as sanitising lift buttons, don’t forget about other areas such as the walls, doors and the pit – this is the gap between the platform and the edge of the lift. Often, rubbish, dirt and debris end up in this gap and accumulate over a period of time making it one of the dirtiest areas of the lift. It’s a good idea to get this cleaned regularly by a professional. Not only will you lift feel but cleaner but removing any trapped dirt will keep it running smoothly too.
Encourage social distancing
In line with government guidance, social distancing should be followed in all areas of your business including the lift. To keep your elevator more hygienic, try staggering its usage by only allowing users to ride in isolation or two at time.
Although you are able to keep your distance easier while using an escalator, this doesn’t make them any more hygienic than lifts. With everybody holding on to the same handrail, for example, you need to be on top of your cleanliness throughout the day.
Wipe down handrails
The handrails must be wiped down regularly to avoid germs and bacteria being transferred from person to person. Wipes and antibacterial spray can be used to clean the surface quickly.
Add a sanitiser station
Why not add a sanitiser station to the top and button of the escalator? This way users can clean their hands before and after using the escalator to keep the area more sterile. All you will need to do is keep the sanitiser topped up and working so your employees and customers can access it at all times.
Remove dirt from the steps
Don’t forget about the steps when cleaning your escalator. Dirt and debris can get stuck between the ridges of the platform but this is fairly easy to remove. Machines can be used to loosen the dirt through dry-cleaning so there is no risk of moisture infiltrating the mechanisms.
