Lifts have a lifespan, as do all electronic or technical items similar to this. However, in many cases, it’s possible to refurbish your lift. This means essentially giving it a complete overhaul. If you’re looking at possibly replacing a lift, you should consider which option is most useful to you.
You should ensure that your lift has regular maintenance, so it can last as long as possible. Like anything else, a lift will wear down faster if it is used frequently and rarely maintained. It’s important to call in a service for this lift maintenance.
There comes a time when your lift is obviously not in the same condition it once was in. This is a good indication that you need to start considering your options. Here are the signs of an older lift that is reaching the end of its useful life, which you should be aware of if you own an elevator.
Slower Function: When you notice that the lift is no longer moving as fast as it once did, you should notify a technician. They will be able to check the lift to see what is happening and will be able to tell you if it is even possible to repair it.
Stopping Above or Below a Floor: Once the elevator begins to stop and you notice that it’s just a little off, either slightly above or below the floor, it’s time to get it checked. This issue, called mid-levelling, indicates that the brakes are wearing down. Obviously, that can indicate a pretty serious problem so you certainly need to get it looked at.
Frequent Breakdowns: When an elevator no longer works well and has breakdowns on a regular basis, you need to start checking into replacements or you need to consider refurbishing your lift. It’s normal for things to start failing as time goes on, since it is a machine, after all. However, you don’t need to live with that. It’s possible to repair or even replace it.
On average a lift will last 20-25 years, but that regular use will certainly wear it down and you may need to seek a new one before that time is completely up. However, it may be possible to refurbish your current elevator. It’s also a possibility that your lift is completely done, but you can purchase a used and refurbished lift to replace yours for much less than a brand new one.
Lift Refurbishing: What Is It and When to Do It
Did you know that nearly half of the lifts throughout the UK are over 30 years old? This means that most of them need to be refurbished or replaced. It’s possible that yours fits into this mix.
In most cases, refurbished means that something has been rebuilt and any old parts are replaced. It’s very common with vehicles and appliances and most people feel it is a good option when you aren’t able to get a brand-new item. It’s also a more ecological option, as you are making use of the existing lift for as long as possible.
With a lift, you’ll have many parts replaced and repaired. This gives you a lift that is essentially brand new again and many will opt to offer a guarantee against their work. This is not a requirement however, so make sure you choose a reliable company that is willing to guarantee their work.
Refurbishing will replace the various parts of the lift to ensure it runs well again. Some of the more commonly replaced sections of the lift include the lift drive, the bearing, the lift motor, and the door. It’s even possible that you’ll end up with a whole new interior when the refurbishment is over. Since this is also meant to modernise the lift, you’ll find that it may have a new look, as well.
Upgrade vs. Refurbishment
You also have the option of upgrading your existing lift during the refurbishment. For example, if the motor is burned out, you can replace it with an identical one. This is refurbishing. Alternatively, you could replace it with a better motor, which would be an upgrade. There are different options and you should discuss these with the company to make certain you’re getting what you need.
Ideally, you’ll find out what has to be replaced. In most cases, it will be multiple parts and you’ll be left with a like-new lift that you can trust and enjoy using once more. The company should let you know ahead of time what will be changed and replaced and you can ask any questions you may have. This is also when you’ll be asked to make decisions such as to upgrade or simply refurbish the existing elevator.
In some cases, the engineer may find something wrong with the elevator that will require getting rid of it altogether. If this is the case, you’ll have to make the ultimate upgrade, buying a new lift. You may also have the option of replacing your broken-down lift with one that is already refurbished. This is faster, but you do want to make sure you have a warranty on the newly refurbished lift.
Considerations When It Comes to Lifts
As you purchase a new or refurbished lift, it’s important to consider whether or not the company is trustworthy and whether or not they offer ongoing technical support. If something happens to the lift, who can you call? You should also be able to schedule regular maintenance checks, as well, to ensure everything is going well and the lift is always in good condition.
During the maintenance, the engineer will check the cables, brakes, and the control panel. They will also take a look at all the basic functions to ensure it’s working well. Once that has been determined, you can continue using the elevator. There are also many times when something will need to be replaced, such as a button or a cable. This is normal in the maintenance of a lift.
The biggest issue is when multiple things need to be replaced on a regular basis. That’s a good indication that you need a refurbishment, or if that has already been done, you’re ready to take on a whole new lift. It can be exciting to install a new lift, but it also takes time. This will affect everyone who uses the lift and they may not be terribly happy about the down time.
It’s your responsibility to give people options. If you have two lifts, for example, then you can have one refurbished or replaced while the other is still in operation. In cases where there is only one lift, you’ll need to figure out what to do with everyone for the days that the lift is out.
Preparing to Install a New Lift
Once your lift is ready to be installed, you’ll need to let other people in the building know that the lift will be out of order for a time. This is particularly important if you have people with mobility issues in the building. Be sure to give them notice so they can make other arrangements if needed. You’ll also want to post written notices.
The next step is to schedule in the maintenance crew and ensure that they have the time and space they need to install the new or refurbished elevator. This can be done fairly quickly, but you should expect the elevator to be out for a bit. To get a more exact idea, talk to the installation company about the timeline. They’ll be able to tell you want to expect.
Finally, the new lift will need to be tested. This ensures there are no problems with the installation and that it is ready for regular traffic. As soon as it is cleared for use, you can let the others in the building know and everyone can begin using it once more.
A refurbished lift is a cheaper option than replacing the entire lift with a brand new one. However, the refurbished option may have less of a warranty and it may not last as long as a brand-new lift. This is where the hard choice has to be made. Which option will you go for?
