Five Things to Consider When Choosing a Lift
Lifts are useful in a variety of buildings, including homes, apartment buildings, and offices. However, there are so many different types and styles of lifts that it can be confusing to figure out which one to use. Here are a few things you need to look at when deciding on a lift for your building.
How big should your elevator be? Most elevators are three by four feet, but they also come in larger sizes if you need them. This is something that you need to discuss with your lift company, as they will be able to calculate everything for you, depending on what kind of loads you expect.
2. Load Capacity
Small buildings and low traffic spaces can easily get away with a load capacity of 1,000 lbs, but you may need more if you are using the elevator for cargo or if there is a high level of traffic. There are load limits on the lifts, but you can get a lift designed for your load expectations.
Any time you are transporting people, safety measures need to be considered. There are a number of systems that should be put into place to keep you and anyone travelling on the lift safe. These include an alarm system, backup systems for power failures, a brake system, and a telephone installed inside the elevator cabin.
There is a wide range of lifts, starting with smaller, more basic options, which cost less, and going up to luxury lifts that are a pleasure to ride. However, aside from the initial price of the lift, you also need to consider how much the installation will cost. You may need to renovate the building somewhat to make room for the elevator, as well. Houses, in particular, are rarely designed with the idea of adding a lift in the future, so they may require extra building to accommodate the lift.
5. Drive System
The drive system is also an important choice to make. Your lift installer can explain everything a bit more in detail, but you will also need to do some of your own research. The most common small elevator drive systems include the winding drum and counterweight chain drive. Some of these, such as the winding drum system, will need a machine room in order to house the drive.
A lift is a big investment and as such, it requires careful thought. Consider asking your lift installer if you can see examples of the different types of lifts they make and this can help you make your decision. Keep in mind that bespoke lifts are also an option.
