For most people, getting trapped in a lift is their worst nightmare. You’re stuck several stories above the ground, in a small confined space, and the seemingly only available help is a red button. Knowing what to do and how to calm yourself down if you ever find yourself stuck in a lift can be extremely beneficial. It may not seem like something that you should plan for, but things do happen and, unfortunately, lifts do get stuck from time to time. Below we share our top tips on what you should do if you find yourself stuck in a lift.
If the lift you are in suddenly grinds to a halt or the doors won’t open, your immediate response may be to enter panic mode, particularly if you are claustrophobic and feel uncomfortable in confined spaces. It’s easier said than done, but remaining calm in this situation is key. Take a deep breath and try not to get too worked up; wasting energy panicking will not get you out of the lift any quicker. Remember to breathe. If the lights have gone out, use your phone as a source of light.
Every lift has an emergency call button, designed to be used in this exact situation. Pressing this button will notify building maintenance or the building’s security that there is an issue with the lift. Some elevators also have emergency phones in them. Do not jump or try to pry open the doors; doing so could worsen the problem. Make sure that you provide your name, address of the building you’re in and the problem at hand when you get through to someone. If no one answers your call, try banging on the door to grab the attention of people outside.
Once you have pressed the button, you’ll have to wait for building maintenance or security to reach you and assess the problem. During this time, try not to panic; instead, take your mind off what’s going on and relax knowing that help is on the way. Again, it’s easier said than done, but wasting energy on panicking is not productive. If you have a book, sit down and read it. Alternatively, message your friends or family and let them know what is going on so that you have someone to talk to while you wait for help.
